Over the last weekend we received a phone call from our youngest son, Kevin, with some great news. He and his wife, Stephanie, are expecting their first child -- and her due date is just when we're planning on being in Texas this October.
Our current plans are to work in Des Moines, Iowa this summer at Adventureland, and then to possibly work in the vicinity of Fargo, ND as inspectors for the sugar beet harvest. From there we will be heading south for our appointment October 20 at the Tiffin Motorhome factory in Red Bay, Alabama for warranty work on our Phaeton. This should give us just enough time to get things taken care of and get over to Liberty Hill, Texas (Austin area) for the happy event!
We're very happy for Kevin and Stephanie, and for our grandchildren, Tristam and Kaila. We look forward to being with them for the new arrival.
Meanwhile, here in the Yuma area, this past weekend was the annual Winter Visitor Appreciation day in Algodones, Mexico. Saturday morning Mandy and I, along with our friends Harry and Verena, left early to beat the crowd and to take part in the festivities. Later in the day we were joined by Gord and Cathy, John and Lisa, and Frank and Donna -- all members of our Foothills Bicycle Club.
The Algodones merchants were serving free Corona, several brands of Tequila, and brandy alexanders, along with the food and entertainment, all along a blocked off street in the main shopping area of Algodones. The day was sunny and warm, and, as you can see we all had a good time.
To combat the intense sun, a number of us purchased the latest version of Mexican sun visors, and later in the day Cathy purchased six of them to take back to their friends in Canada. We're expecting that they will be a big hit at upcoming cycling events.
As you can see, spring has arrived in the Yuma area, with daytime temperatures reaching into the low 90s, with night time temperatures in the 50s -- perfect weather for our cycling and for other outdoor activities. We recently had a potluck gathering at an area about 30 miles east of Yuma called Baker Tanks. This area is technically in the Barry Goldwater Firing Range, but close enough to the edge that they generally allow visitors in there without the normally required permit.
The tanks are a series of very small lakes in rock formations, and were called "tanks" by the settlers since they would naturally hold rainwater and runoff for a long time, and were used by cattle and wild animals as a watering hole. See http://www.fishingworks.com/lakes/arizona/yuma/wellton-se/baker-tanks/ -- if you zoom in on the Google Earth view at the bottom of this link, you will see a circular roofed building called a ramada, (and also see it in the pictures below) where we gather for our potlucks. It has a fireplace in the middle, which can be used from 4 different sides, and is made out of concrete, local rock, and several well placed steel beams in the roof. We were surprised at the amount of water in the tanks, as it has not rained significantly here for several months. Apparently, their storage capacity is pretty significant. We timed our visit for the full moon, and it was a spectacular sight when it rose over the desert hills about an hour after sunset (unfortunately my attempt at pictures of the moon failed miserably -- you just can't do it without a tripod).
We also recently had a great bicycle ride in the Wellton-Mohawk valley east of Yuma, completing a 63 mile circuit from Wellton to an agricultural cooling plant, where we had lunch, and then completed the loop back to Wellton. Mandy and I rode our tandem along with 15-20 other members of the Foothills Bicycle Club and completed our second metric century ride of the month. Here are a couple of pictures as we were getting ready to ride.
A tin cup or a gilded goblet, a hut or a castle, wobbly bicycles or a Bentley -- to wherever and by whatever means, my love, our journey is splendid,
our cup is full.

Almost four years later . . . .
Its been four years since we left the great Pacific Northwest in our motorhome -- we've tried to keep in touch with our friends, but have finally decided that we'll join the digital revolution and start a blog which we'll periodically update with our activities and travels.
We moved into our 38 foot Safari Zanzibar motorhome in Fall 2000. Since 2004, we've spent our winters in Yuma, Arizona, and work at various locations in the western US during the summer. We are active cyclists -- Mandy and I each have a road bike and a mountain bike, and we have a tandem that we ride together. Its a bit challenging to take all 5 bikes with us as we travel, but that's helped by the room in the Honda Odyssey that we tow behind the motorhome.
We worked last summer at Meteor Crater, Arizona as tour guides. Meteor Crater is located 35 miles east of Flagstaff, Arizona, just south of Interstate 40. We had a great time there giving hour long interpretative presentations during a one hour hike along the rim of the 50,000 year old crater, which was created by a meteor which weighed over 300,000 tons.
Here we are with our fellow guides Terry and Merilee on a hike we took around the 3 mile perimeter of of the crater.
This is our good friend Eduardo, the head tour guide at Meteor Crater, with Mandy on our visit to Wupatki Monument, north of Flagstaff.
For more information see the Meteor Crater website: Meteor Crater.
During our summer at Meteor Crater, we came to the decision that it was time to replace our 2000 Safari Zanzibar motorhome, and, after much research and soul-searching, decided to purchase a new 40 foot Tiffin Phaeton.
We joined the Tiffin RV Network on the Internet, which is a group of Tiffin Motorhome enthusiasts, and got all sorts of great information. We scoured the Internet, looking for the best deal, and finally decided to buy it from Davis Motorhome Mart in Memphis, TN. We placed our factory order with them, and then when our job at Meteor Crater ended in September, we took off for Memphis and picked up the new coach from our salesman Brian, moving in on September 26.
From Memphis, we went to Red Bay, Alabama, where Tiffin has its factory, and had a few things "taken care of" (a process all RV'ers are familiar with) and then headed back west toward Yuma for our usual winter stay. We stopped in Texas for several weeks in late October and early November, attending our first Tiffin rally, seeing some friends,
and attending our son Kevin's wedding . . . . . . . .

The reception was lots of fun, but there were several people who we suspect were gate-crashers, and who signaled to us with a strange single-digit wave . . . . .. ?????
After having way too much fun in Texas, we arrived back in Yuma for our usual winter stay on November 16. Since then we've been cycling around the Yuma area with the Foothills Bicycle Club, Greg has been working at Mr. B's Bicycle Shop in the Foothills area, and we've been having fun with old friends here.
We've also had the opportunity to introduce a number of our new friends to the Yuma area. We spent a delightful day in Algodones, Mexico with Mark, Sue, Richard, and Patsy, who we'd met in Texas at our first Tiffin Rally.
We also spent an interesting (and wet) day going with them to Slab City, near the Salton Sea just west of us in California. Its an old military facility which is now a hangout for a bunch of interesting folks who are dropping completely out of society --
During January we also managed to take time to go to up to Quartzsite, Arizona for the annual RV show and gathering there, and just a week ago, to go to Casa Grande, Arizona for the second annual Gypsy Journal rally. We met up with our friends Mark and Sue, and Richard and Patsy there and had a great time.
At Quartzsite we also made a commitment to work this summer at Adventureland Amusement Park in Des Moines, Iowa. While we're there we're also planning on riding RAGBRAI (Register's Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa), and the park has given us the week off to do the 500 mile ride. We're already in training!!
